Going back to seven resources instead of three. MMH7 is most in line with the earlier games. I like both games for their music, stories and atmosphere. 7 feels more alive. 6 has intricate unit abilities, 7 is somewhat simpler but adds flanking. I'd say 6 is a bit of a weird guy, 7 the newest version of 5.
They are completely different (albeit related) games. Heroes of Might & Magic 1-5 are turn-based stratey games, while all the Might & Magics are roleplaying games. The relationship between the game worlds and storylines of the different series is a bit complicated, but I'm sure some MM experts can fill you in on the details. Homm 2, 3 and 4 were and still are amazing. 5 & 6 are not bad, but not as amazing as the earlier ones (probably because they sold out to Ubisoft). Age of wonders because I am an age of wonders fan. Later had a blast with MMH 6, playing the Necropolis faction.

Age of Wonders doesn't compare to Heroes of might & magic 3, but it does compare pretty accurately to another game from 20 years ago called "Master of Magic."
